Hey everyone!
I’m writing to you from the stunning island nation of Fiji – yes, I took the plunge and moved here! After living here for 18 years I have a lot of insights into the island life.
For those of you considering a similar leap, I know it can be equal parts exciting and daunting. So, I wanted to share some of my experiences so far to give you a glimpse into what moving to Fiji is really like.
Island Paradise Found
First things first, Fiji is undeniably beautiful. Pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and crystal-clear coral reefs are everywhere, except in the capital of Suva! Whether you’re exploring the Yasawa Islands by kayak or snorkeling in the Great Astrolabe Reef, there’s an endless supply of natural wonders to discover over your weekends away.
Finding Your Fiji
Fiji has a variety of living options. Suva, has a vibrant energy with a mix of urban amenities and island charm. For a more laid-back experience, there are smaller towns and villages scattered throughout the archipelago, however, if you are moving for work you will most likely be based in either Suva or Nadi, neither of which have white sandy beaches.
Island Time
Adjusting to “Fiji Time” is a real thing. Here, things move at a slower pace, and deadlines are more flexible. It took some getting used to, but it’s definitely a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of my old life. I’d recommend bringing a healthy dose of patience when you relocate to Fiji.
Making Connections
Fijians are some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met. Their warmth and hospitality are genuine, and they’re always happy to share their culture. Learning a few basic Fijian phrases goes a long way in building connections with the locals. (Bula means hello, by the way!)
Island Life Hacks
There are definitely some adjustments to be made when moving to a new country. Here are a few things I’ve learned:
- Cost of living: Fiji can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you embrace local produce and avoid imported goods.
- Finding work: If you’re planning to work remotely, great! However, job opportunities for expats can be limited and this needs to be worked out before you relocate to Fiji.
- Embrace the outdoors: Life in Fiji revolves around the outdoors, so pack your swimsuit, sunscreen, and a sense of adventure! Talanoa Treks have wonderful inland trips, I would recommend putting them on your To Do list.
Fiji’s not all sunshine and rainbows…
Like any place, Fiji has its challenges. Be prepared for power outages, limited internet access, and the occasional bit of rain, or weeks of rain if you are living in Suva. The up-side of rain is that everything is lush and green and rain brings beautiful rainbows.
