Thinking about a move to Fiji?

When you relocate to Fiji it will be an exciting adventure! Here are some things to consider packing for your new life in paradise. While every move is different there are some basic items that will make your move smooth and easy.

Casual attire for market shopping

Clothing:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing in natural fabrics like cotton and linen will be your best friend in Fiji’s warm climate. Pack plenty of shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and swimwear.
  • You may also want to pack a long-sleeved shirt or two for occasional cooler evenings or visits to air-conditioned spaces like the cinema. Most people use an umbrella instead of a rain jacket.
  • If you plan on visiting any villages, pack a sarong or “sulu” to cover your shoulders and knees as a sign of respect for the local culture.

Footwear:

  • Pack comfortable sandals, flip-flops, or water shoes for everyday wear.
  • You may also want to pack a pair of closed-toe shoes for hiking or exploring rocky terrain.

Essentials:

  • Pack your medications, toiletries, and any other personal items you can’t live without.
  • You may also want to bring a voltage converter and adapter if your electronics use a different voltage system than Fiji. We have 240 volts with a three pin power outlet, identical to Australia and New Zealand
  • A hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen are essential for protecting yourself from the strong Fijian sun.

Optional items:

  • Depending on your hobbies and interests, you may want to pack things like snorkeling gear, sports equipment, a good book, or a camera.
  • Fiji can be quite casual, but if you have a job interview or special occasion, pack one or two outfits for those situations.

Things to leave behind:

  • Heavy winter clothes won’t be necessary in Fiji’s tropical climate.
  • You can probably find most toiletries and basic necessities in Fiji, so there’s no need to overpack on those items.

Household:

  • Bedside tables & lamps! It’s weird but they are very hard to find here, especially for a particular style.
  • Can opener, a basic kitchen necessity that can be hard to come across
  • Good knives. If you like to cook then I’d suggest brining as much of your kitchen as you can!
  • “Enough pictures to feel at home” was the advice given to me when we moved here 18 years ago. It was good advice that I now pass on to my clients. Having a few items that make your new house feel like home is a good tip for an international move.

Biosecurity restrictions:

  • Be sure to check Fiji’s biosecurity restrictions before you pack. There are restrictions on what food, plants, and animal products you can bring into the country. You can find more information on the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji’s website.

By packing light and focusing on essentials, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying your new life in Fiji. Contact me to book an online meeting to discuss your move.
