New Zealand, with its stunning landscapes and laid-back lifestyle, is a dream destination for many. If you’re planning to relocate there or you are moving home and you want to bring your beloved pet along, it’s important to understand the specific requirements and regulations involved. If you are reading this post and you are more flexible with timing please read on. The requirements will remain the same. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process of bringing your pet to New Zealand from Fiji:
Deadline Approaching
I received this notice from the Ministry of Primary Industries today. The Import Permits team will be shutting down for the Christmas Period. If owners would like to take their pets to New Zealand before the end of February, I am recommending that you apply now.
Eligibility and Import Requirements
New Zealand has strict biosecurity measures to protect its native wildlife. Not all pets are eligible for entry. Generally, only cats and dogs from approved countries can be imported. If you have a returning animal that will be allowed, and cats and dogs that have been adopted in Fiji have been allowed to enter.
To ensure your pet’s eligibility, you must meet specific health and vaccination requirements. These may include:
- Rabies vaccination: Coming from Fiji, there is no requirement for a rabies vaccination or blood test
- Microchipping: Your pet must be microchipped with an ISO standard microchip.
- Health certificate: A recent health certificate from a licensed veterinarian is mandatory.
- Blood tests: Dogs require blood tests to check for specific diseases.
- Parasitic treatments: Both cats and dogs require internal and external parasitic treatments on a certain timeline.
Import Permit
Once you’ve confirmed your pet’s eligibility, you’ll need to apply for an import permit from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). This process can take several weeks, so it’s crucial to start early. The permit will outline the specific requirements and conditions for your pet’s entry into New Zealand.
Quarantine
Upon arrival in New Zealand, your pet will likely need to undergo a period of quarantine. The duration of quarantine varies depending on your pet’s country of origin and vaccination status. Coming from Fiji the quarantine period is 10 days. During this time, your pet will be housed in a government-approved facility and monitored by veterinarians.
Cost Considerations
Bringing a pet to New Zealand can be a significant financial investment. Apart from the cost of flights, quarantine fees, and veterinary expenses, you may also need to budget for veterinary services and an airline-approved travel crate.
Tips for a Smooth Transition
To minimize stress for both you and your pet during the relocation process, consider the following tips:
- Start early: Begin planning well in advance to ensure you meet all the necessary deadlines.
- Choose a reputable pet transporter: Find Your Feet Fiji is an IPATA member, ensuring your pet will be handled professionally
- Prepare your pet: Gradually acclimate your pet to the travel crate and any potential changes in routine.
- Pack essential items: Having an old towel or t-shirt that smells like “home” in the crate will create a sense of familiarity.
By carefully following these guidelines and working closely with relevant authorities, you can successfully bring your furry friend to New Zealand and embark on a new chapter together in this beautiful country.
