When you live in Fiji the dining out options are fewer than one would imagine. There are plenty of resorts with restaurants, but if you are an expat in Fiji it gets pretty tiring to be treated like a tourist with a resounding “Bula, where are you from?”. The helpful people at The Urban List have published an article titled: 20 Fiji Restaurants You Need To Add To Your Bucket List.
Here’s the thing about Fiji. Things come and go quickly, with no warning. So if you are brave enough to publish something ‘current’ there is a good chance that it may be out of date within a month. That’s why booking an Orientation Tour with Find Your Feet Fiji will take away a lot of the guesswork on where to take clients or colleagues for dinner. Where can I have a family meal that isn’t going to be disturbing if my kids can’t sit at the table for 2 hours?
The Urban List People have done a great job with their article. However, even though it was only published in early September one of them is already closed as a restaurant and is only offering catering services. Eleven of the restaurants are on the western side of the mainland, which is the tourist centre for Fiji. So if you are reading the restaurant bucket list as a tourist, it will be perfect. Quite a few are located within a resort, which can take away from an authentic feel.
On the positive side for people living in Suva, seven out of the 20 listed are open and in Suva. They are privately owned, so you know that by going to these restaurants you are supporting a local business. There are a couple that are missing on the list, but again, like I said earlier, things change surprisingly fast. Maybe when the Urban List author was here in Fiji the other restaurants weren’t open, or they were sufficiently off the beaten track that the author didn’t find them.
